Brian O’Malley


Feature Film & TV Commercials Director, Ireland

Brian is currently working with Palomar Productions and Bron Studios on the Spaghetti Western TV series That Dirty Black Bag, inspired by the classic Leone westerns. Shooting summer 2020 in Spain, Italy and Morocco, Brian is currently setting up the English language series with creator and co-writer Mauro Aragoni. Brian and Mauro will also split directing duties across the 8 episodes.

 

Brian's second film, The Lodgers, a classical period ghost story written by David Turpin, was filmed in Loftus Hall in Wexford in October 2016. The film was produced by Tailored Films, and funded by The Irish Film Board and Epic Pictures Group. It stars Charlotte Vega, Bill Milner, Eugene Simon and David Bradley. It received its world premiere at TIFF in September 2017 and was released worldwide in February 2018. Purchased worldwide by NETFLIX, it began streaming on the platform August 2018.

 

His debut Feature Film Let Us Prey had its world premiere in Belgium at BIFFF 2014. There it won the prestigious Méliès d’Argent award for best European Fantastic Film. It was released world wide in Summer 2015, receiving both theatrical and DVD/VOD.

 

It streamed on Netflix USA in October 2015. It also reached No.1 in the iTunes Horror charts for the US, and made many of the top horrors of 2015 lists including Blumhouse and Gamespot.

 

Brian has also done 2nd unit work on the Palomar produced TV series The Name of The Rose, based on the book of the same name. The show aired world-wide in 2019.

 

Alongside screenwriters Mark O’Rowe and Terry McMahon, Brian won the Hartley Merrill International Screenwriting Prize at Cannes in 2005 for the original screenplay Sisk, which was also the winner of the Tiernan McBride Screenwriting Award that same year. Brians highly acclaimed short film ‘Screwback’ was based on the feature script ‘Sisk’. Brian has also directed the tragic and moving tale of survival of the human spirit with the Burma set short film ‘Crossing Salween’.

 

Brian has also been directing TV commercials with Red Rage Films in Ireland since 2001. He has made over 200 TV commercials worldwide, and has directed many Shark, ICAD and Golden Lion award winning commercials and campaigns including Meteor ‘Stuff’, Trociare ‘Interview’, Today FM and Teletext ‘Nice Bus’.
